So I thought I'd share some of the stats of my trip through BR386:
Total distance: 296 km
Total driving time: 3h10min
Total stalled time: 2 hours
Breakdowns: 18 that I managed to count, between cars, trucks and motorbikes.
Minor accidents: 7, all of them crashes. These are not included on breakdowns
Major accidents: 4, including a head on collision that blocked the road for two hours until the wreckage could be moved, a Beetle that got launched upside down into a ditch and caught fire, and a biker who got hit by a truck and probably won't make it back home.
All in all, a pretty smooth trip...

That's horrible. I usually see one 'broken' (stopped on a shoulder) car every 200 km maybe and I tend to see one minor accident every 20,000 km or so? Maybe once every 10,000.
I drove a bit today as well: Total driving distance: 290 km. Total driving time: 2h50min. Total stalled/breakdown/accident: 0

Well, that's Brazil for you... most of the breakdowns and all of the accidents were on the hilly portion of the road, which has been all but abandoned since the toll companies were pulled off. What was a relatively decent road a year ago is now an uneven, unsignaled mess, with potholes in pretty much all of it. It's a real car breaker, I'm actually surprised my Tipo came through scot free...
